Remember, now you have two priorities; your
primary healthy goal and the hidden agenda which leads you off
track. Having created a game plan for the hidden agenda, you
will want to also return to the healthy goal game plan.
To do both, you will need to
Stay accountable to your game plan. You now
have two game plans; one for the goal you are trying
to reach and one for the issue which leads you off
track. You won’t need to do both all the time.
Monitor how you are doing and when you need to focus
on an off track problem. You can use record sheets,
written reminders, or checking in with friends to help
you.
Stay open to other problems. Keep an open,
positive attitude about the challenges and other
possible barriers you have to reaching your goal. This
will help you approach the problem, rather than
dismiss it or distract yourself. An open attitude can
also discourage shame, anger or other discouraging
reactions to yourself.
Be good to yourself. Getting
off track happens and will likely happen again. The
key isn’t to make sure it never happens, but to
respond quickly and positively when it does happen.
Don’t worry or get down on yourself for getting off
track. Give yourself a pat on the back when you get
back on track. See yourself as someone who will slip
at times but knows how to coach yourself back to
success.
